Headland Class Descriptions

At Patti Rutland Jazz – Headland, we offer a variety of classes that give every dancer the chance to grow, shine, and feel inspired. From our youngest beginners to advanced performers, each class is designed to build confidence, technique, and a love for dance. Browse the descriptions below to find the perfect fit for your dancer, along with dress code details to help them come prepared.

Monday

Ages 6–9

​

6–9 Year Old Tap Class
Let’s make some noise—on purpose! Our 6–9 year old tap class is all about rhythm, coordination, and confidence. Dancers will learn classic tap steps like shuffles, cramp rolls, buffaloes, and time steps as we build strong musicality and clear sounds throughout the year.

Dress Code:

  • Any color leotard

  • Black Mary Jane style tap shoes

  • Hair up and out of the face

  • Bring a water bottle

6–9 Year Old Jazz Class
This high-energy class introduces dancers to the fundamentals of jazz technique in a fun and supportive environment.

Dress Code:

  • Any color leotard

  • Black slip-on jazz shoes

  • Hair pulled up and out of the face
     

6–9 Year Old Ballet Class
This foundational class introduces young dancers to classical ballet technique in a structured and encouraging environment.

Dress Code:

  • Leotard (any color), pink tights, pink ballet shoes

  • Hair pulled back and out of the face
     

Performance Team – Dynamini Rehearsal
For Performance Team members ages 6–9. Focused on learning, cleaning, and perfecting choreography for competitions and performances.

Dress Code: Form-fitting dancewear, hair pulled back.
Bring: All shoes and props.
 

Performance Team – All Levels
 

Stretch & Technique
For Performance Team members only. Dancers focus on flexibility, strength, alignment, and injury prevention.

Dress Code: Tight-fitting dancewear, hair pulled back.
Bring: Yoga blocks, pilates ball, therabands (provided).
Purchase: 1 lb ankle weights (1 lb each).
 

Intermediate
 

Performance Team Rehearsal (Intermediate)
Dedicated rehearsal for intermediate Performance Team members to polish choreography.

Dress Code: Form-fitting dancewear, hair pulled back.
Bring: All shoes and props.
 

Intermediate Leaps & Turns
Technique-focused class to build control, balance, and execution of leaps, jumps, and turns.

Dress Code: Form-fitting dancewear, hair pulled back.
Shoes: Half-sole or black jazz shoes.
 

Intermediate Contemporary
Explores creativity and artistry through grounded technique, floorwork, improvisation, and choreography.

Dress Code: Form-fitting dancewear, hair pulled back.
Shoes: None.
 

Advanced
 

Performance Team Rehearsal (Advanced)
Dedicated rehearsal for advanced Performance Team members to polish choreography.

Dress Code: Form-fitting dancewear, hair pulled back.
Bring: All shoes and props.
 

Advanced Leaps & Turns
Advanced drills and combinations to refine technique and power in jumps and turns.

Dress Code: Form-fitting dancewear, hair pulled back.
Shoes: Half-sole or black jazz shoes.
 

Advanced Contemporary
Challenging class that develops artistry, musicality, and physical expression through contemporary technique.

Dress Code: Form-fitting dancewear, hair pulled back.
Shoes: None.

Intermediate
 

Intermediate Tap
Builds on tap fundamentals with more intricate rhythms and footwork.

Dress Code: Form-fitting dancewear, hair pulled back.
Shoes: Black tap shoes.
 

Intermediate Ballet
Structured class building posture, alignment, coordination, and artistry through barre and center work.

Dress Code: Leotard (any color), pink tights, ballet bun.
Shoes: Ballet shoes.
 

Intermediate Jazz
Focus on jazz fundamentals: kicks, leaps, turns, and expressive choreography.

Dress Code: Form-fitting dancewear, hair pulled back.
Shoes: Half-sole or black slip-on jazz shoes.
 

Intermediate Hip Hop
Energetic class introducing grooves, isolations, and combos in a fun environment.

Dress Code: Comfortable fitted clothing, hair secured.
Shoes: Tennis shoes required.
 

Advanced
 

Advanced Ballet
For dedicated dancers looking to refine their ballet technique, strength, and artistry. Emphasis on placement, alignment, turnout, and precision.

Dress Code: Leotard (any color), pink tights, secure ballet bun.
 

Pre-Pointe / Pointe
For dancers beginning pointe or advancing en pointe. Focuses on foot/ankle strength, alignment, balance, and artistry.

Dress Code: Leotard, tights, ballet bun.
Shoes: Ballet shoes (pre-pointe) or teacher-approved pointe shoes.
DO NOT PURCHASE POINTE SHOES UNTIL INSTRUCTED BY FACULTY.
(If you have already been placed en pointe, you may continue.)

 

Advanced Jazz
High-level jazz class focusing on power, control, and performance quality.

Dress Code: Form-fitting dancewear, hair pulled back.
Shoes: Half-sole or black slip-on jazz shoes.
 

Advanced Hip Hop
Advanced hip hop class combining grooves, isolations, and intricate combos.

Dress Code: Comfortable fitted clothing, hair secured.
Shoes: Tennis shoes required.
 

Wednesday
 

Creative Movement (Ages 2–3)
Playful class introducing toddlers to movement, rhythm, and coordination through games and exercises.

Dress Code: Any color leotard, pink/tan tights, ballet shoes.
Hair pulled back.
 

Ballet & Tap Combo (Ages 4–5)
Introductory combo class teaching ballet positions and tap rhythms.

Dress Code: Any color leotard, pink/tan tights.
Shoes: Pink ballet shoes and black Mary Jane tap shoes.
 

Homeschool Ballet
Daytime ballet class introducing technique, posture, and grace in a supportive setting.

Dress Code: Leotard (any color), pink tights, ballet shoes.
Hair in a secure bun.

Advanced Ballet
For dedicated dancers looking to refine their ballet technique, strength, and artistry.

Advanced Tap
Fast-paced class for experienced tap dancers to develop complex rhythms, advanced footwork, and improvisation.

Dress Code: Form-fitting dancewear, hair pulled back.
Shoes: Black tap shoes (lace-ups or slip-ons).
